History
Step back in time to the spring of 1957 when the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament was just a hopeful idea. In those days, the existence of billfish in the North Carolina waters was uncertain. However, a group of fishing enthusiasts came together to dispel the rumors and promote deep-sea fishing off the Crystal Coast. The Fabulous Fishermen Club was born, and with the help of local merchants, they offered a cash prize to the first angler who could catch a blue marlin in these waters. That cash prize ignited a revolution, encouraging anglers and captains to venture further offshore. Finally, in September 1957, Raleigh angler Jimmy Croy made history by landing a 143-pound blue marlin aboard the Mary Z with Capt. K.W. “Bill” Olsen. This catch forever changed the face of Crystal Coast fishing, and the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament was born.
Rules & Registration
To ensure fair competition and uphold the tournament’s integrity, all participants must adhere to a few rules and registration guidelines. First and foremost, all boats must be registered with the Tournament Committee, and the entry fee paid to qualify for prizes and trophies. At least one person from each boat needs to attend the Captain’s Meeting, which takes place on the Sunday before the first day of fishing. This meeting provides critical information and updates regarding the tournament rules. Please note that this is a rod and reel, hook and line tournament, and the fish must be fought by rod and reel from the boat. Certain practices, such as shooting, harpooning, or lancing, are strictly prohibited. In the event of a tie by weight, the marlin with the largest total measurement of girth plus length will be declared the winner. These rules ensure fair play while preserving the excitement and challenge of landing the magnificent blue marlin.
